History of Music Video
Music videos have transformed in the space of 40 years. To analyse these changes, we've been assigned to answer eight broad questions based on the History of music videos, we also had to watch eleven different music videos making notes on the range of features used and how they've impacted the quality of the videos
When was the first music video made?
The first music video was made in the year 1979 with the song title being 'Making plans for nigel'
What is a Talkie?
A 'Talkie' is known as a film with a soundtrack
The Jazz Singer was released in October 1927 and the recorded sound mainly featured music and effects.
In the early 1930's - Talkies became popular and were a global phenomenon
When was MTV first aired and what was the first video that they showed?
When was Thriller made and what year was it aired?
MTV first aired on August 1st 1981 and the first video shown was 'Video killed the radio star'

Thriller was made on November 30th 1982 but aired for the first time on 2nd December 1983. Michael Jackson is the first black artist to be shown on TV. It also sealed MTVs reputation as a new cultural force, it dissolved racial barriers.
When did Youtube first start and how has it changed the way we consume music videos?
Youtube first started on February 14th 2005, it has increasingly changed due to all music videos now being viewed digitally. People are more likely to become aware of upcoming and existing artists by viewing their songs via youtube.
What impact has Youtube had on MTV and other music video channels?
MTV channel is no longer the main source of music videos which is a disadvantage, however, MTV says 'This is a great opportunity to change' their role by evolving beyond showing music videos. They are now multi-platform meaning they have apps/online websites. They also air several reality shows which have enabled them into gaining a wider audience.

How popular was MTV and what were their highest viewing figures in comparison to today?
What were the average viewing figures for Youtube?
MTV gained their highest views in the 2011 VMA's with a staggering 12.4 million views. Compared with today- 9.8 million
No actual figures have been stated. Although estimately, people watch hundreds of millions of hours worth of videos and generate billions of viewers
