In today's lesson we analysed the music video of the Saturdays 'What about us?' we all carefully counted how many shots/cuts were included in the video for the first minute. We wrote down the name of the shot, the duration and the elapsed time. Afterwards, we calculated the percentage of performance shots (meaning the shots that the girls were singing in). Afterwards, we were set to film our own version of the music video copying their actions. We gathered our equipment and headed outside.

Here is the original music video:

Analysis of Music Video

All music videos have their own styles. Whether it's performance, dance or narrative the videos will be solely based on these themes in a distinctive way. Most videos combine these styles.

We're first introduced to a long shot of Mario playing the piano. He's wearing black which matches the piano - this connotes the close relationship between him and his music. It also foreshadows power because at this point, he knows more than he should - he also knows more than the audience. He's beginning to expressing how betrayed he felt.

Narrative/Performance

Mario- I don't wanna know

Here, we're then taken into a two-shot of him and his lover being intimate. We're beginning to see a narrative as this counts as the equilibrium. Again, this foreshadows disruption as the reflection of them on the right is shown - they've switched places which connotes the position of the two characters. Mario is placed against a white wall whereas the girl is beginning to fade into the dark compared to the actual shot on the left.

A Medium shot of Mario looking at the photo of them two together - his hand is placed on his forehead which clearly show it's affecting him. He's also wearing black again and this reveals his depression

This two shot is very similar to the previous one, however it's with a different man. The first side of the frame shows them two being intimate but aren't positioned as close to eachother. Whereas in the right frame, they're both placed in darkness implying they're both in the wrong, having an affair is hurting the protagonist. Lighting is very significant in these scenes.

Next there's a high angle shot of him with several photos on his bed. We as an audience end up being more superior because he's revealing all to us, there's nothing left to hide.

Mis-en-scene is significant here: We have  P Diddy placed at the centre of the frame doing his performance shots. Whilst doing so, the background is a wall filled with terms that relate to love&heartbreak - terms that definitely relate to this narrative. P Diddy's outfit match the colour of the background which imply he's relating to this situation - his lyrics also show this.
