A Music Video is a short film usually ranging from 3-4 minutes long which has the sole purpose of illustratung the lyrics and mood of the song to gain a better understanding.

Music Video has the purpose of:

1) Promoting the artist/s by building awareness of their profile - their main selling point

In addition to voice, Image is crucial with some artists and music videos are a great way of showing this. An example of this would be in the Spice Girls 'Wannabe' video, all members have their own look because they're continuing their current brand. Sporty&scary spice are most significant because they've been dressed/looked to match their names.

2) Extension of revenue- Music Videos are a catalyst for making money.

It raises the profile of the artists which persuades the audience to buy their products (CD's,downloads,clothing line) This benefits the record label as they'll receive a fair share of earnings. Historically, revenue was earnt through CD sales but now with the advances in technology money is made through online downloads (Itunes,spotify etc..) Concerts are another way of earning revenue because mainstream artists are aware of their secure fan base - this results in their management's decision to price the tickets at a high rate. 

Mainstream artist Adele has performed at hundreds of venues around the world including London's 02 Arena - tickets were usually sold out within hours enabling her to make a substantial amount of money. 

record labels would collaborate with music channels in terms of distributing their artist's video. Not only will the channels earn money and recognition, but the video will be exposed on several platforms. The label will earn money depending on the amount of views/requests for that particular song. 

3) Entertaining Audiences

Music Videos are seen as another form of entertainment. Most videos are based on a narrative so videos have to be produced at a high quality if they want to express the plot clearly to their audience. If successful in doing this, people will be most likely to remember the music video/artist and new fans could be made as a result of this.
